(“Just pretend you're a janitor. Janitors are never terrified.” -- Cary Grant as Devlin in Notorious)
There is a breath behind me. It is the breath of some one who has smoked a pipe, kissed many woman, shouted at air planes, laughed at the jokes it bore, laughed at the core of the center of everything, everything was always a romantic comedy, everything was laughing and breathing alive, a cocktail olive, a beautiful star. And the breath does a cart wheel, offers me thimble of pink Champagne -all it could find in the wreckage- and blows me a kiss that tastes like cherries dipped in vanilla. It sits down next to me, it says, “I AM CARY GRANT.” (A star.) It says: I am still alive. And we watch the burning, recoiling hurricane together, the death of cinema’s black, white, and golden age. The breath recites for me my life lesson of the day: “MEN ARE FROM EARTH AND WOMEN ARE FROM EARTH.” It didn’t seem too appropriate for the occasion. The breath touched my hand, I held its head, and we watched the sinking things.
